I am a fan of e-books and that is one of the many reasons why I prefer Mac over Windows. One of the best features in Mac OS X is their universal dictionary. Just select a word anywhere and press command-control-D to get its meaning. In search of similar software for Windows, I found WordWeb.

OpenOffice for Mac is a completely free alternative to Microsoft Office for Mac and the equivalent of Word in OpenOffice for Mac is Writer. OpenOffice was originally created by Oracle but is now developed by Apache and one of the most widely used MS Office alternatives on Mac. WPS Office is a free document processing suite whose WPS Writer app will serve you well as a Microsoft Word alternative. WPS Office 2016 Free can open and save to a long list of popular file formats native to those applications like docx, doc, and more.

Get Office apps for Mac. Start quickly with the most recent versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive —combining the familiarity of Office and the unique Mac. I don't know if Appleworks is still available, but I doubt if it's free. If you want to e-mail document files, I think it'd be worth it to buy the Microsoft Mac package. I have Word, Excel, and Powerpoint that are all compatible with PCs. (I have an iBook G4.).

  • Shortcut – Just press control and right-click on any word to get the meaning and thesaurus (this can be customized too).
  • Universal Dictionary – You can use it with anything including Adobe Reader, web-pages, Media Player (for lyrics) etc.
  • Offline – It works offline also, just in case you require it on your office computer which does not have a net connection, or in classes during lectures.
  • Web Reference – It also provides the web-reference in case you prefer Wiki-Dictionary over others.
  • FREE – and above all, WordWeb is FREE :D.
