Did you know you can copy your AutoCorrect entries from one computer to another? You might want to share yours with a work colleague, or you might have a new computer and not want to set them all up again.
Beware: Copying these files to another computer WILL overwrite the AutoCorrect files in the destination computer, so if you’re copying them to a colleague’s computer, make sure they have listed their own AutoCorrect entries first (see https://cybertext.wordpress.com/2017/05/03/word-list-keyboard-shortcuts-autotext-and-autocorrect-entries/).
Notes:
- This blog post refers to Windows. You may be able to do something similar on a Mac, but I don’t have a Mac and so can’t test it on a Mac.
- If you can’t see the AppData folder, follow the steps in this post: https://cybertext.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/cant-see-the-appdata-folder/
Your AutoCorrect entries apply to all programs in the Microsoft Office suite, and are stored in *.ACL files under your user profile on your computer. When you copy them, you’ll put them in the same place but under the other user’s profile on their computer.
- On your computer, go to: C:Users[your_user_name]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftOffice.
- You’ll see a suite of ACL files listed. The MSO numbers in each file name indicate the language/locale; e.g. MSO0127.acl = Math, MSO1033.acl = English (US), MSO2057.acl = English, (UK), MSO3081.acl = English (Australia). (For a full list of locale numbers, see: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/221435/list-of-supported-locale-identifiers-in-word.) Hint: Look at the date last modified — the ACL files with the most recent dates are likely the ones your installation of Office uses.
- Copy the ACL files you need (or copy them all if you’re not sure and they’re going to a new computer).
- On the destination computer, go to: C:Users[user_name_of_other person]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftOffice.
- Paste the copied files into this folder, saying yes to overwrite the existing files.

Packers and movers have made life easier while shifting homes. I can’t think of the mess nowadays shifting homes from one place to another without packers and movers. How about shifting your Microsoft Word AutoCorrect entries from one computer to another? Were you ever in need of shifting AutoCorrect entries from one computer to the other; either from your home computer to the one at office, or from your desktop to laptop, or to take a backup of the AutoCorrect entries before formatting your hard drive? If yes, how do you do this?
Add Autocorrect Words
One way to do this is as said in Microsoft help page but I think it is lengthy to understand and execute. The other way is to use the tool that I am going to give you below, a “free AutoCorrect backup and restore utility for Microsoft Word.” I had this software working promptly for MS Word 1997, 2000 and 2003 but haven’t checked with 2007 version. I moved my MS Word AutoCorrect entries from my desktop running on Windows XP/MS Office 2003 to my laptop running on Windows Vista/MS Office 2003. You too should be able to backup, transfer and restore AutoCorrect entries from computer to computer, or copy AutoCorrect entries to a Word document before a hard drive format. There is nothing wrong in trying this tool with your version of operating system and office suite, as it is not going to break up anything on your computer and after all, this is a free download! So, here are the installation instructions for you:
- Open MS Word. Go to Tools/Macro/Security. Click on ‘Low’ Security Level. (Do not forget to restore the security level to medium or high, whatever your default is, after running the macros.)
- Save the downloaded file to your desktop.
- Unzip the template inside the zipped file to your desktop.
To back up your AutoCorrect entries to a MS Word document
- The AutoCorrect macro runs automatically when you open this template; but if you cancel out of the dialog, you can click on the “Start” button on the “AutoCorrect” toolbar. If the Toolbar isn’t visible, right-click on any toolbar and select “AutoCorrect” from the list of tool bars.
- Select “Backup.” The macro will export all your AutoCorrect entries to a Word document. It will allow you to choose the file name and save path but defaults to your default document directory, with a default file name of: “AutoCorrect Backup Document.”
- Transfer AutoCorrect entries to the other computer.
